Many small businesses today face a dilemma when it comes to stopping spam, viruses, phishing, worms and spyware. They face the same sophisticated threats as larger enterprises, but don't have the resources in staff and budget for protection that larger organizations typically have.
According to industry estimates, around 80 per cent of global email traffic is spam. The number of viruses and worms detected "in the wild" continues to grow and a growing percentage of traffic is aimed directly at carrying out electronic crime, from identity theft to corporate espionage.
The operational and financial implications of being hit by a virus or worm could be catastrophic to a small business.
Is there anything we can do? Yes. By following a few basic rules we can make it almost impossible for any of these malicious people to get into or damage our computers.
-Always run Antivirus software and make sure that it is updated daily with the latest “Virus Definitions”
-Install and run Anti-Adware and Anti-Spyware, again making sure that it is always up to date.
-Ensure that you have a strong firewall in place
-Make sure that your system has all the latest updates and service packs from the manufacturer.
Of course even following all these rules and being as vigilant as possible still, there could come a time when something sneaks through. That’s when you will need to call a professional and hope that the impact can be minimised.
* If a virus strikes, your computer system may become unusable. Repairs can be expensive and disrupt your work for hours or even days. Vital data, if not backed up elsewhere, may be irretrievable
* A hacker could steal valuable business and personal data - including passwords and bank details - without you knowing it. Data on other devices connected to a local area network could also be compromised
